Wish Apple on its 25th Birthday

Mac LogoYesterday was Apples Mac 25th birthday. The original Macintosh was released back on January 24th, 1984.

The first Macintosh usually called the Macintosh 128k, was an inauspicious beginning for one of the most exciting companies in the industry. It was expensive & underpowered for the time, and its novel mouse-driven interface was unpopular with techies. But the Mac is a survivor, developing and changing through the years, taking the first dip into the water of portability & later making waves with innovative design and remarkable success.

Mac has inarguably helped the industry as a whole even if you and I am not a Mac user. Personal computing wouldnt be where it is without it. So come with me and wish Mac belated Happy Bisthday!

Toshiba Satellite P505D S8930

Instead of just a flat solid color, Toshiba used its Fusion Finish on the P505D with its sonic pattern in black onyx. Its a light pinstripe pattern on a glossy black background on the lid, with palm rests, and speaker surround above the keyboard. The speakers sound great by the way, far above the laptops budget price tag. The keyboard is large and comfortable with a full number pad on the right end. The keys are flat like a chiclet style keyboard, but they float above the tray so youll have to watch your cookie crumbs.

Theyre also somewhat slick, making it slightly unpleasant to type on. Due to the glossy nature of everything, the laptop collects a lot of fingerprints. Overall, Toshiba Satellite P505D is a nice looking package and is certainly what a majority of its cost went to. To the right of the keyboard is a set of backlit touch sensitive media controls, the power button, and an Eco mode key. This mode significantly cuts back on power usage by cutting back on display brightness and other nonessential features.

It also shows a line graph to prove the power savings. The 18.4 inch wide screen LCD display offers a 1.680x945 native resolution, which is not standard for a screen this size. In fact, weve never tested a system with this size screen carrying such a low resolution. More standard for this size are resolutions of 1.920x1.080 or 1.900x1.200. Despite the lower resolution, the screen is good for just about anything youll do on it, with decent color performance, brightness, and dynamic range. If those are two things youre interested in, youll want to search out a P500 series laptop that actually has them.

Features
  • Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8930 : Average for category (desktop replacement)
  • Video VGA : VGA and HDMI or DisplayPort
  • Audio Stereo : speakers, headphone/microphone jacks Stereo speakers with subwoofer, headphone and microphone jacks
  • Data : 3 USB 2.0, mini-FireWire, eSATA/USB, multi-format card reader 4 USB 2.0, SD card reader
  • Expansion : ExpressCard 54
  • Networking : Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, modem Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Optical drive : DVD burner
Ports for the most part are what we expect to find on a system in this price range. Only the eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port is an anomaly, but its a good one and has Toshibas sleep and charge feature for charging devices even when the computers sleeping. Also, though there are spots for HDMI and DisplayPort connections on the left side, they have been plugged up.

If those are two things youre interested in, youll want to check out another version of the P500 series that actually has them. Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8930 is a retail only fixed configuration, so what you get is what you get. However, the memory and hard drive compartments are easily accessed through the bottom of the case. This model comes with 4GB of memory, but can be expanded to 8GB total.

Girl using Wi-Fi on LaptopAs everybody know, American Airlines is prepping in-flight WiFi in addition to, uh, anti-missile systems. Good news on the former, pricing is set. Good if $10 WiFi for flights less than three-hours or $12.95 for longer flights excites your fiscal sweet-spot like it does Americans.

Rollout will begin this summer on AAs 767-200 jets before rolling out across its entire fleet.

Scientists create darkest material ever

Scientist create darkest imageResearchers at a US laboratory claim to have created the darkest material ever; a carbon nanotube which is one atom thick and rolled into a cylinder. For an object to be completely black, it must absorb all the colors of light over every angle and wavelength while reflecting none back, and scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, may have just gotten one step closer. The team built an array of vertically aligned, low-density nanotubes -- rough on the surface to minimize reflections -- and then measured the optical properties. They discovered that the objects very good at absorbing light, while downright rotten at reflecting it, thus creating a new standard for "blackness."

In practice, their nanotubes could form a super-black object, leading to the creation of more efficient solar panels or solar cells, or more importantly, a Kuro display that goes beyond absolute black. "Theyve made the blackest material known to science," Says Professor Sir John Pendry, though Shafts representatives have called for a recount.

Port your existing mobile number to Google Voice

(Cross-posted from the Google Voice Blog)

867-5309 could be one of the most iconic phone numbers of all time, but it’s not the only number that a lot of us remember by heart. Many of us have a phone number that weve shared with family, friends, and contacts over the years and are reluctant to let go.

One of the most frequent requests we hear from people who use (or want to use) Google Voice is that they’d like to get all of Google Voice’s features without having to give up their long-time phone numbers.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Number Porting is available for all existing Google Voice users. This means you can make the mobile number you’ve always used your Google Voice number, so it can ring any phone you want—or even your computer.

To get started with Number Porting, log in to your Google Voice account, visit the Settings page and click on “Change / Port” next to your Google Voice number.

Porting your number to Google Voice costs $20 and is usually completed within 24 hours. You may incur additional charges, including early termination fees, from your wireless carrier. Contact your carrier to get more details about the charges applicable to you.

After porting your number to Google Voice your mobile service plan will be cancelled, and there are a couple of steps that you’ll have to take to continue making and receiving calls on your mobile device. For more detailed instructions on how Number Porting works and to find tips for making the process as smooth as possible, visit the Google Voice Help Center.

Number Porting is currently available for existing Google Voice users and will become available to new users within the next few weeks, and at this time, Google Voice is available in the U.S. only

HP Envy TouchSmart 15 review

HP Envy TouchSmart 15 review

TechRadar rating

4/5

For

  • Powerful processor
  • Good graphics card
  • Loads of RAM
  • Nicely made
  • Comfortable to use

Against

  • Rubbish battery life
  • Iffy trackpad
  • Poor viewing angles on screen
  • Loud and hot
  • No SSD

Well-judged blend of quality, price and features

HPs Envy line is the companys high-end range - the top-class stuff, in theory - but has produced mixed results recently. We were impressed by the Spectre XT and Envy X2, but werent so sure about the Envy 6 or Envy 4.

But the HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j004ea is closer to what the Envy line originally stood for, so we always had high hopes for it. Its simply a highly specd machine, fitted into a smart chassis.
Inevitably for a Windows 8 laptop, it has a touchscreen. But its generally aiming straight at being a regular premium machine, without gimmicks or being incredibly small and light. Think MacBook Pro or Samsung Series 7 Chronos rather than MacBook Air.

Reassuringly weighty

Indeed, at 29.9mm thick and weighing 2.56kg, its far from being an Ultrabook. But what you get in exchange is a superb spec sheet. Theres a quad-core Intel processor, a 2GB Nvidia graphics card, a colossal 16GB of RAM and a generous 1TB hard drive.

Thats all combined with a 1080p screen, Beats Audio speakers, a full-size keyboard and multitouch trackpad, and four USB 3.0 ports (most laptops will only give you two SuperSpeed ports).

Its all particularly impressive for the price. At around £1,000, its great value for pros, making the extra £500 youd spend on a MacBook Pro or Razer Blade Pro seem steep if the core specs are what you want.
HP Envy TouchSmart 15
HP isnt just applying the premium features to whats inside the machine, though - its taken a stab at upping the build quality on the outside, too. The casing is partly aluminium, specifically on the top and sides of the bottom half of the machine, making it feel solid and high-quality in use.

Its a little bit of a cheat, because it reverts to plastic on the bottom, but thats not to the detriment of the overall build quality. Theres very little of the creaking or flex you get on cheaper laptops - except for on the back of the screen, where the case does bend quite a lot. We doubt it would be enough for the screen to get damaged in normal use, though.

Theres also a little bit of give beneath the keyboard, but from our time with it, we dont see any effect that would have on durability.

Ultimate Ears UE9000 Wireless Headphones Review

The Ultimate Ears UE9000 are the current top-line circumaural headphones from Logitech, the brand many professional musicians go to for custom earphones. Selling for a street price of above S$400 in Singapore, I got a review unit along with the UE900 IEM earphones to test for myself. Is it worth the price tag?

UE9000 Specs:
  • Driver diameter: 40mm
  • Impedance: 32ohms, 1kHz
  • Sensitivity: 105dB SPL/mW, 1kHz
  • Frequency response: 20-20000kHz
  • Noise isolation: 14dB

Whats in the box
  • Headphones
  • Cable with on-cord mic and controls
  • Molded travel case
  • ¼-inch adapter jack
  • USB charging cable
  • User guide and warranty

Review

The UE9000 is huge and hefty, but for a good reason. It is built with premium brushed aluminium and piano black gloss plastic materials. The headband has a strip of silicon rubber instead of the usual leather to give a better grip on your head. You can connect via wireless Bluetooth that supports voice profile, allowing you to answer phone calls from your smartphone. It also has active noise-cancelling function which was not very effective and cannot be disabled. When you press the noise-cancelling button to disable it, you mute the sound as well.

You can also connect the audio cable directly to any music device and listen to the UE9000. The cable comes with mic, volume and answer buttons to use with iOS devices (the volume buttons do not work with non-iOS devices). Using cable, you can choose either to listen without the power, or with power which activates the noise-cancelling function. The latter also amplifies the volume and boosts the bass response tremendously. Personally I prefer to listen without power, as I thought it sounded more natural, albeit with less pompous bass. Somehow the amplifier - and perhaps with the noise-cancelling function - applies an audio limiter to compress the sound.

Conclusion

The UE9000 is a multi-functional headphones: use it with Bluetooth to enjoy your music and pick up calls from your smartphone wirelessly, or use it with cable when battery runs out. The noise-cancelling function is not that effective but nevertheless a good feature to eliminate some ambient noise. Audiophiles will appreciate the subdued but balanced sound quality when using with cables and without power. Bass-hungry users will love the sub-bass response and boosted treble when noise-cancelling function is active. The UE9000 is some good quality headphones, but contains too much gadgetry in a product, eclipsing the audio quality that Ultimate Ears is known for.

Fall 2011 App Engine events

Buenos días desde Buenos Aires!! Wow, we are just blazing through the summer! We had an exciting Google I/O in May where we saw the launch of the Go runtime, introduction of the Backends feature, and confirmed Googles commitment to the platform with our plans to leave preview mode, not to mention the five releases since that time. We then hit the road this summer with team members appearing around the globe, including mega events like the Cloud Computing Expo, EuroPython, and OSCON.

At Google I/O, many App Engine team members gave in-depth technical sessions. Alfred Fuller, an App Engine Datastore engineer, revealed how the High Replication datastore gives greater reliability and availability for users. Michael Handler, one of App Engine’s talented Site Reliability Engineers, discussed how App Engine works in production. At OSCON, the largest open source event in the world, yours truly gave a three-hour App Engine overview and workshop to help new users get up to speed, and earlier in the year at PyCon, described how Python users can avoid “vendor lock-in” via the Django-nonrel project by porting their applications from webapp to Django, allowing them to move on to or off of App Engine as they please with only minor configuration changes. We participate in events like these because we like to communicate with users to find out what they like & don’t like about the platform, and we often take their suggestions to heart!

This fall we have a full schedule, appearing at many developer events worldwide, including Google Developer Days and Google DevFests. At the Google events, well recap App Engine and those announcements we made at I/O, and you’ll learn how to build exciting applications using App Engine and other Google cloud technologies as well as how to build games in the cloud. Here are the dates, events, and locations that we will be visiting:

UK carriers wont offer a subsidized Nokia 808 PureView

If you are a UK resident, hoping to get the 41MP of cameragoodness that is the Nokia 808 PureView at a nicely subsidized price, we have some bad news for you. None of the British carriers will be offering the Symbian smartphone, so getting it SIM-free will be your only option.

O2, Three and Everything Everywhere (which is the company behind the UK branches of Orange and T-Mobile) have all confirmed that they wont be carrying the device and so has Vodafone Britain. Virgin Mobile UK has left the door open for further negotiations with Nokia stating that it wont be offering the Nokia 808 PureView "yet", but you shouldnt get your hopes too high.

Its obvious that carriers prefer to subsidize smartphones running on data-hungry platforms like iOS, Android and Windows Phone and the expensive data plans that go with those, so we guess turning a deaf ear to the Nokia 808 PureView was expected. Symbian is not exactly the preferred OS for those who like to constantly stay connected, so carriers have little return on its investments in it.

So, spending about £500 on a Nokia 808 PureView seems like your only chance of getting the device. Still interested?

Sony Groundbreaking Cameras Alpha A7 A7R RX10

Year-in, year-out, camera makers are churning our variants of cameras in existing form factors or sensor sizes.

When Sony announced the RX-series, starting with an 1-inch RX100, we knew it is the start of a journey of game-changing innovation. The RX1 came out soon, the first full-frame compact camera (non-interchangeable lens).

Then today (16 Oct 2013), Sony announces their foray into full-frame mirrorless, starting with the Alpha A7 and A7R. A7 sports 24.6MP sensor while A7R is fitted with 36MP. In line with most modern cameras, they come with Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity. These new breed of bodies support the same E-mount as the NEX mirrorless series, except with cropped frame. Together with the announcement, Sony is also producing 5 full-frame E-mount lenses to work with the new bodies. There will be adapter to allow existing A-mount lenses to work with these new bodies.

  • SEL35F28Z: Sonnar T* FE 35mm F2.8 ZA – Wide-angle, full-frame fixed focal lens best for street scenes and landscapes.
  • SEL55F18Z: Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA – Dust-proof and moisture resistant, ideal for outdoor photography.
  • SEL2470Z: Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS – 24-70mm zoom, ideal for portraits, landscapes and everyday shooting.
  • SEL2870: FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS – Versatile, mid-range zoom. Great for family portraits and everyday snapshots.
  • SEL70200G: FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS – Premium, telephoto zoom.
  • SAL70200G2: 70-200mm F2.8 G SSM II (A-mount) – Telephoto A-Mount lens best suited for portraiture, sports and wildlife photo-taking.
  • LA-EA4 and LA-EA3: full-frame compatible mount adaptors – Allows users to enjoy the use of their A-Mount lenses on their E-Mount cameras.

To up the ante, Sony also announces a new RX model. The RX10 is a comparatively large camera using the same sensor as RX100 MkII but with a bright zoom lens 24-200mm F2.8. This model reminds me of the Cybershot F828 which I owned many years back. This model will address the customer segment who prefers their camera to have a traditional camera build and grip, yet they need a bright lens with great zoom range.

All these new cameras will be available for purchase in Singapore from end-November 2013.

Karbonn Titanium X review

One of the most remarkable trends in the Indian mobile industry over the past few months has been the rise of smartphones sporting full-HD screens. Although such devices used to cost a lot of money in the past, a number of companies are now releasing more wallet-friendly models. The trend in the country might have been set by global brands, but Indian domestic handset makers are not far behind.

Micromax was the first Indian brand to join the full-HD bandwagon with its Canvas Turbo launched last year. Now, after a period of relative quiet, Karbonn has marked its return to the Indian market with its first smartphone with full-HD display, the Karbonn Titanium X.

Karbonn is clearly in the mood to win significant market share, and its back with a vengeance in terms of both specifications and price. But does companys first full-HD smartphone, the Titanium X, pack enough punch to overcome more established players such as Samsung, Micromax, HTC, LG and Xolo? We take a closer look.

Look and feel

The Titanium X is a departure from the companys usual Android smartphone design, and it looks like a lot of time was spent on the design stage. The Karbonn Titanium X is definitely light at 143 grams, and sports rounded edges. It is sturdy, but it might be a little too wide for single-handed operation, and those blessed with smaller palms will find it tiring to carry the device around.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_front_panel.jpg/

The 5.0-inch full-HD display takes up most of the space in the front with a silver lining around the edges. Like most other smartphones, the ambient light and proximity sensors are lined up on top alongside the earpiece and front-facing camera. We were amazed to see the 5-megapixel front-facing camera accompanied by an LED flash at the top. We assume that its meant to be helpful for taking selfies. Beneath the display one can find the Home, Back and Menu capacitive buttons marked by dotes, rather than the standard Jelly Bean icons. Notably, the front has no logo branding, much like Nexus smartphones.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_rear_panel.jpg/

The Titanium Xs back is made of shiny plastic and tends to slip out of the hand during prolonged usage. The plasticky rear panel houses a 13-megapixel camera with dual LED flash, and theres a loudspeaker at the bottom left. There is a Karbonn logo just beneath the rear camera. The power button is on the right panel and we had no problem hitting it anytime, while the volume rocker buttons are placed on the left side. We wish the volume controls had been placed a bit lower on the left panel, because at times we had to use both are hands to adjust the volume. The top panel houses a 3.5mm audio jack accompanied by the SIM tray, and the Micro-USB port is on the bottom. Getting to the SIM card tray on the Titanium X can be a problem as you have to open a flap next to the headset jack and then insert a pin to pop the tray out. The process takes some effort, and isnt intuitive at all.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_earpiece_grill.jpg/

At a glance you might think the Karbonn Titanium X uses a unibody design, but it has a removable back panel even though the battery is non-removable. Unfortunately, this phone is only available in white.

Display

The screen of a smartphone is a critical aspect to consider when making a purchase decision, and of late, smartphones such as the Spice Pinnacle FHD, Wicked Leak Wammy Passion Z Plus and Micromax Canvas Turbo have hit the market, all with full-HD displays and all priced under Rs. 20,000. The Karbonn Titanium X now joins the same club. An HD screen might not make a difference to many people, but when you hold one of these phones up next to a device with a low-resolution screen, you can see the difference.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_display.jpg/

The Titanium X features a 5.0-inch IPS full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) screen with pixel density of 441ppi. The panel attracts a lot of smudges, but nothing that cannot be wiped away quickly. The screen has decent viewing angles and though colour reproduction is not the best, it gets the job done.

Since the Titanium X is equipped with an IPS display, we found that it was good to read text on. Browsing the Web and prolonged reading on the device were also relatively comfortable, thanks to the large screen. The touch response of the Titanium X works smoothly.

At full brightness under indoor lighting, the screen performs decently. Under direct sunlight, we found it hard to read even at full brightness, and we had to use our palms to shade the screen to be able to see whats on it.

Camera

Karbonn_Titanium_X_rear_camera.jpg/

In terms of photographic ability, Karbonn has equipped the mid-range Titanium X with a 13-megapixel autofocus rear camera accompanied by a dual-LED flash. The rear camera offers 4x digital zoom, HD (1080p) video recording, touch to focus and a panorama mode. The Titanium X also includes HDR mode for video recording, which has been seen on some high-end Android smartphones. Other features seen in the camera app include portrait retouch, self-timer, self-portrait voice guide, smile shutter, focus mode, and ISO and exposure value adjustment. The rear camera can click images at a maximum resolution of 4128x3096 pixels.

We were disappointed with the camera, which, in spite of a number of shooting options, did not really match up to our expectations. We tested the Titanium Xs rear camera in outdoor, dim and indoor environments, and found that picture quality was average, with washed out colours and grainy edges. The photos taken under well-lit conditions were somewhat better than those taken in low light, which had a lot of noise.

Notably, the camera shutter is comparatively slower than the other Android smartphones, which means this phone is only good for taking pictures in a pinch.

The front facing 5-megapixel camera on the Titanium X is pretty decent compared to other mid-range Android devices and can be used for video calls over Skype and, of course, taking selfies. We found videos and images captured both indoors and outdoors through this camera to be a bit grainy. The company has added a front-facing LED flash, which comes in handy when clicking in low-light.

Software/ Interface

At a time when the world is waiting for Android 4.4.2 KitKat to arrive on its handsets, Karbonn has used Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for the Titanium X, which is disappointing.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_screenshots_homescreen.jpg/

The Karbonn Titanium X ships with Android 4.2.2 out of the box. It might not be the most up-to-date, but its the most popular version of Android on mid-range smartphones in India at the moment. We are yet to hear any details about Karbonns plans to update the Titanium X.

Karbonn is using some skinned elements such as app icons. Although the changes are not as radical as HTCs Sense UI or Samsungs TouchWiz UI, a few neat touches have been added to the OS without becoming intrusive.

Similar to other Android 4.2 devices, the notifications tray on the Titanium X features a settings shortcut and a clear all button. On expanding the settings button one can find options for quick access to the user profile, airplane mode, battery status, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, data connectivity, data usage status, audio profiles (for alerts and other notifications), brightness, display timeout and auto rotation.

The Karbonn Titanium X comes with standard Android features such as the lock-screen widgets. One can choose from Calendar, Digital Clock, Gmail, Google Now, Google+ posts and Messaging along with any third-party widgets. These show information and help in performing actions quickly, even without unlocking the device. Users can also launch the camera directly from the lock screen by pressing the power button and then swiping to the right of the screen.

The native Music and Video apps on the Titanium X offer very basic functions. The music player does not offer many options while listening to music, and the default video player was unable to support some popular video formats like .AVI and .MKV. This isnt a problem thanks to the easy availability of third-party video players.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_screenshots_apps.jpg/

The Karbonn Titanium X comes with some preloaded apps including Flipboard, Hugama, Maxthon Browser, mydala, Truecaller, UC Browser, and WhatsApp. The Titanium X also comes preloaded with a host of Google apps such as Gmail, Google Search, Google+, Hangouts, Google Maps, Play Books, Play Movies and TV, Play Store and YouTube.

Performance/ Battery Life

The Karbonn Titanium X is powered by a quad-core MediaTek chipset (MT6589T) clocked at 1.5GHz along with 1GB of RAM and PowerVR SGX544 GPU. MediaTeks updated MT6589T processor was launched last year, so it should perform quite decently. Unfortunately, this didnt translate to real-world performance. We found that the Titanium X lagged when launching some apps. Admittedly, the lag is not consistent but considering that this is a quad-core processor, it is quite disappointing.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_bottom_panel.jpg/

It came as no surprise that the benchmark scores were not impressive at all. As expected, the Karbonn Titanium X barely made it through our synthetic benchmarks. The CPU performance scores were not impressive: the phone scored 14,930 in AnTuTu and 5,701 in Quadrant. On the graphics front, it only managed to push 3.4 frames per second in the GFXbench test, while it scored 1735 in the 3DMark Ice Storm Extreme runthrough.

There is 16GB of storage on the Titanium X, which is further expandable up to 32GB with the help of a USB device plugged in using OTG (USB on-the-go). The company supplies an OTG adapter in the box.

Call quality on the Karbonn Titanium X was impressive and we did not encounter any problems with the clarity and volume through the earpiece grill.

Karbonn_Titanium_X_top_panel.jpg/

The Titanium X lasted for around 7 hours of continuous video playback, which is not all that great. We played some music on the Titanium X through its speakers, and the sound was distorted at high volume. However, the experience on the supplied earphones was better.

The Titanium X ships with a 2300mAh battery that can deliver up to 240 hours of standby and up to 6 hours of talktime, according to the company. Based on our observations, the Titanium X is a decent performer when it comes to battery performance. We were able to get about 12-14 hours with normal usage on the Titanium X, during which Wi-Fi was switched on all the time and the screen brightness was set to auto. We browsed the Web for more than an hour and made a few calls totalling about two hours, and had the usual notifications for messages, emails, Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp coming in.

With heavy usage of the Titanium X, during which the screen brightness was set to full, and 3G was active throughout, we made calls for about an hour, took a few casual photos and tweaked them a bit with third party camera apps. We then watched a few YouTube videos for around two hours and then spent two to three hours gaming. The device lasted for about 8-9 hours, so using more reasonable settings obviously helps in making the battery last longer.

Verdict

Karbonn_Titanium_X_box_contents.jpg/

The Karbonn Titanium X is a mix of good and not-so-good. The 5.0-inch full-HD display is no doubt the USP of the device and is great for watching videos on, but colour reproduction can be a bit of a damper. Notably, the Titanium X has a tendency to slow down when multiple apps run in the background. Further, the images clicked by Titanium X are also not good enough, and the screen is barely visible in sunlight. Battery life is acceptable without being exceptional.

The Karbonn Titanium X is not a perfect phone by any means, but when you consider its price tag, it is not a bad performer at all.

Those looking for alternatives can consider the Micromax Canvas Turbo, (Review) which again sports a full-HD display. For those who would like to consider a Windows Phone can consider the Nokia Lumia 625 which offers a 4.7-inch screen.

The First One On My Ground updated

Screen capture, DNA Store in Finland telling Jolla will be available soon

Updates 12.12.2013:

  • Jolla has officially apologized for the delays at their webshop support site
  • Shipping to outside Finland is starting. Yesterday 800 of these pre-orders were updated to "In picking" status, today the number has been growing. There are at least 4000 customers waiting for their new phones outside Finland. In additoin to that, most of the finnish 1st pre-order customers are still in the waiting queue, while 2nd wave customers in Finland are picking their phones.
  • DNA shops have received only a limited amout of phones, but enough for all their shops in Finland. Some have been already sold to public, some are reserved for 2nd wave pre-order customers until Saturday morning.
  • Jolla hasnt officially informed the amounts of orders or sales, nor how many phones are delivered to DNA. A longer while ago, the latest official statement of amounts was that pre-order campaigns have gathered about 20 000 interested customers in 136 countries. How many of these have actually ordered the phone is unknown, but by the information Ive received from other customers, I carefully dare to estimate that Jolla has sold mre than 10 000 phones by now.
  • Customers are busy tracking whats happening at the back door of Jolla, more than 250 orders are followed on an online worksheet. Only a Jolla community can do something like this!

Original article:

Jolla Smartphones come to the DNA Shops in Finland. From DNA:

  • Jolla phones are available to public in Finland starting 11-Dec-2013
  • Finnish 2nd wave pre-orderers, who have chosen a DNA Store, can have their phones too
  • Jolla starts shipping phones to 2nd wave customers at the same day
  • All first wave pre-order customers, both in Finland and outside Finland, havent yet (10-Dec) received their phones, or tracking codes for the shipment. Some finnish first wave customers have the phone In Hand, many see it shipping at the moment. Jolla is currently shipping as many first wave phones as they can (each worker only has two hands here in Finland).

Jolla Smatrphones outside Finland are shipped on this week. From JollaHQ:

I personally understand that Jolla must prior things in Finland, as Finland is the only country with an operator agreement between DNA and Jolla, but Id wish them to inform their customers better in this matter. Outside Finland, customers are obviously expected to be satisfied for "The First One - On My Ground". This has caused some whining and few ugly posts around the community, and not without a reason, as Jolla hasnt been totally open for their customers  in each country and each pre-order wave. In my opinion, the whole mess could have been avoided with a simple, open minded message to all 1st and 2nd wave customers: "We are sorry, we cant ship all the Jollas in the true prority order, due to an important operator agreement in Finland. However, your Jolla is arriving in a time promised to you. Please have patience... Please contact... etc."  As simple as that. Hopefully this is the future.
Tweet from JollaHQ, concirning customers outside Finland:
Well, I suppose that the  community just hopes all the best for Jolla - this was a small mistake, compared to all possibile walls which a startup company might have run into. entering the mobile market. First wave customers are, however, getting their phones shipped before other 2nd wave customers outside Finland. In a way, they can be seen as the topic here state: "The First One - OMG"

Press release DNA Finland 10.12.2013:

Jolla smartphones available from DNA Stores from 11 December

Jolla smartphones will go on general sale in DNA Stores from 11 December. That is also the day when the second chance pre-bookers can collect their phones if they have selected a DNA Store as the collection point.

"At this point, only a limited number of phones will be available, but they will be shipped to DNA Stores all over Finland, and, in addition to pre-bookers, will be available to the general public, as well" says Cedric Kamtsan, DNAs Business Director in charge of the Jolla project.

The first batch of Jolla phones went on sale at a launch event arranged by DNA in Helsinki at the end of November. At the launch event, DNA offered the fastest pre-bookers the opportunity to buy their phones among the first 450 owners of Jolla smartphones. Deliveries to all other first edition pre-bookers are in full progress.

Second phase pre-bookers from Finland can collect their phones from a DNA Store or by post from Jolla, according to where they have chosen the delivery in advance. Deliveries to second phase pre-bookers will begin on 11 December, both by post and from DNA Stores.

Phones due for collection from DNA Stores will be held at the DNA Store selected by the customer until 13 December - byers will get an SMS confirmation today. Any phones not collected will be placed on general sale on Saturday 14 December, but pre-bookers will naturally have a chance to collect their phones, subject to availability.

DNA has played an integral part in the product development and commercialisation of Jolla smartphones and is the operator with the exclusive right to sell Jolla phones in Finland during the launch phase.

Jolla is powered by Sailfish OS, a truly open and distinct mobile operating system. Navigate effortlessly with the gesture-based user interface and load the phone with top Android (TM) apps. More information on Jolla at www.jolla.com.
