Port your existing mobile number to Google Voice

(Cross-posted from the Google Voice Blog)

867-5309 could be one of the most iconic phone numbers of all time, but it’s not the only number that a lot of us remember by heart. Many of us have a phone number that weve shared with family, friends, and contacts over the years and are reluctant to let go.

One of the most frequent requests we hear from people who use (or want to use) Google Voice is that they’d like to get all of Google Voice’s features without having to give up their long-time phone numbers.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Number Porting is available for all existing Google Voice users. This means you can make the mobile number you’ve always used your Google Voice number, so it can ring any phone you want—or even your computer.

To get started with Number Porting, log in to your Google Voice account, visit the Settings page and click on “Change / Port” next to your Google Voice number.

Porting your number to Google Voice costs $20 and is usually completed within 24 hours. You may incur additional charges, including early termination fees, from your wireless carrier. Contact your carrier to get more details about the charges applicable to you.

After porting your number to Google Voice your mobile service plan will be cancelled, and there are a couple of steps that you’ll have to take to continue making and receiving calls on your mobile device. For more detailed instructions on how Number Porting works and to find tips for making the process as smooth as possible, visit the Google Voice Help Center.

Number Porting is currently available for existing Google Voice users and will become available to new users within the next few weeks, and at this time, Google Voice is available in the U.S. only

Update (1:15PM): Included more details about the porting process.

Using the application is very simple: to write an email like any other application of this type, see the section in our email name and no spaces, for which we can write a name and email address fictitious that appear to the receiver of the e-mail as legitimate.

opplanet-wetley-lifestyle-yellow-frames-v29to5

Google Glass has yet to hit a point where its ready for consumer availability, but that hasn’t stopped those who do have their hands on it from asking about the ability to purchase and attach “Prescription” lenses and frames to attach to their device. It makes perfect sense to see this sort of thing available, as many people who wear and operate Google Glass will already wear glasses. Thanks to Glasses company Wetley, if you are one such owner of Glass you can now head over to Opticsplanet and buy yourself a pair of prescription lenses and frames to work with your pair of Google Glass.

The GGRX, which Wetley has aptly named their set of frames to adapt to your Glass, is available starting at $99, and you can order them now off of the opticsplanet website. The lenses in case some of you were wondering are stated as not included with this introductory $99 pricetag, as it is just for the frame alone. There is an available set of lenses that come along with the frame that you can purchase however, as long as you’re ok with letting go of a bit more money. The lenses themselves cost $149, and they come in a variety of options. Wetley offers you the choice of regular clear lenses, tinted lenses which come in varied color options(gray, brown, green, and yellow) and finally a set of photochromic lenses that adjust to light and darken when hit with outside UV rays, or lighten when out of sunlight. The options you choose to customize your lenses with will of course modify the price of your total cost, but you already knew that right?

All together you can buy the stainless steel frame and a set of clear prescription lenses from Wetley for a total of $249.99, which doesn’t sound like such a bad price. Wetley also offers a set of progressive prescription lenses that cost $249.99 as well. However you can also have your local optician make you a pair of prescription lenses specifically for the Wetley Google Glass Frame/Adapter. The Wetley Google Glass adapter mounts to your Glass in seconds, and requires no tools whatsoever to attach. Each set of lenses should you choose to purchase from Opticsplanet comes with a special anti-reflective coating to help reduce eye fatigue and strain. The frame boasts being able to accommodate just about any prescription, so it seems like its possible to work for almost anyone. We think these look rather stylish for something you mount to a piece of wearable tech. What do you think about the Wetley Frame/Adapter and lenses? Let us know in the comments if you’re using Google Glass and would consider purchasing these. opplanet-wetley-clear-frame-lifestyle-main opplanet-wetley-clear-frames-lifestyle-v2 opplanet-wetley-clear-lens-insert-lifestyle-v4 opplanet-wetley-clear-lens-insert-lifestyle-v5 opplanet-wetley-clear-lenses-texture-v-ls opplanet-wetley-clear-rocktexture-v-main opplanet-wetley-new-kit-main-view-main opplanet-wetley-no-lens-v-main opplanet-wetley-no-lens-v-v2 opplanet-wetley-no-lens-v-v3 opplanet-wetley-no-lens-v-v4

Antibacterial Gorilla Glass kills 99 9 of germs keeps your phone healthy

Lets just face it: human hands are disgusting. For all of the hype about viruses on mobile platforms, there is likely a greater risk that you will personally contract a virus from the germs on your smartphone. For years now, there have been various smartphone case options that offer antimicrobial protection, but now Corning wants to make it a standard part of your next device with its new version of Gorilla Glass.

Corning has announced that the next version of Gorilla Glass will feature antimicrobial protection to help kill some of the germs that collect on your smartphone. Corning has talked about the plans back in July last year, but now were getting the proper details about how it will all be done. The plan is to infuse the chemically-strengthened Gorilla Glass with silver ions which are known to have antibacterial properties. Corning says that by doing this, it should be able to kill 99.9% of the germs on your smartphone glass, and all at a minimal cost. The cost of the raw materials alone is said to be less than 50 cents per device.

The silver ions will continually work to kill off the germs on your display, and Corning says that they will retain their efficacy for the lifetime of your phone. Additionally, Corning is working on a new anti-reflection coating for its glass, but still no word on banishing fingerprints. PhoneArena

Your MicroSD Card Is Not Exempt From Hacking

269901-sandisk-64gb-microsdxc1-540x465

When you typically think of security hacks and probable malicious intent regarding your mobile devices, it usually boils down to your mobile device itself. An interesting find from Andrew Huang and Sean Cross from Bunnie Blog however, enlightens us on a hack that is possible on even your microSD cards. It isn’t limited to just the microSD cards though, as Huang and Cross state that the hack affects other types of flash memory as well. The blog post details exactly how the hack functions, and they even go on to explain the reasoning behind why the hack behaves how it does.

30c3-collage

Flash memory can be potentially riddled with bugs and imperfections, which paves the way for such hacks to take place. Huang goes on to say that part of this is due in fact to a few things, including how cheap flash memory is to manufacture and acquire these days. In the simplest terms possible, the cheaper that flash memory becomes, the more unreliable it becomes, making it more susceptible to hacks or potentially dangerous attacks. The problem here lies in the unreliability of the flash memory. The manufacturers know that it’s unreliable and that it needs to be addressed. To do this they fix the issues with assistance from complicated software that is loaded onto tiny micro controllers that sit on the chip. The micro controllers contain firmware that is used to help with the fixes as well, and this is specifically what hackers take advantage of.

If the software and the micro controller both contain bugs, hackers can replace the default firmware that is used to help contain and fix the bugs, with malware that allows them to deliver a specific attack called a “man in the middle” attack. If your flash memory is affected by such an attack, it then proceeds to behave exactly how the hackers want it to, all the while you’re flash memory looks to be acting and functioning exactly as it should. Since there are no set security protocols to cover this type of attack, the only way to really get rid of it is to physically destroy the flash memory. There are more details on the structure of the microSD to better understand this vulnerability at the bunnie.blog post, and you can also check out the video below which does a detailed teardown of microSD cards at 30C3.
