YouTube, the worlds most popular online video-sharing website, launched a localised service in South Korea Wednesday to capitalise on the countrys fast-growing user-created content market.

Sakina Ariswala, head of YouTubes international operation, said it has secured content from local companies for its Korean operation to supplement the vast collection of the US-based operation.

"South Korea is a very interesting market," Ariswala told Yonhap news agency, citing its well-established IT infrastructure.

The companys main focus is first to build global communities and then consider how to make a profit, she said. YouTube now provides localised services in 19 countries.

Users can upload, view, and share video clips through YouTube, which was bought by the worlds top Internet search engine Google in 2006.

YouTube became well known in South Korea after a video clip of a self-taught amateur Korean guitarist playing Pachelbels "Canon in D" received more than 36 million clicks worldwide last year.

But it faces tough competition with home-grown user-created content sites, which have dominated the local market.

Yonhap quoted Lee Won-Jin, CEO of Google Korea, as saying the launch of YouTube here would help spread the countrys popular culture and video content worldwide.

Google launched a Korean-language search site in 2000 but has been striving to boost its presence against competition from local firms in one of the worlds most wired societies. Some 70% of Korean homes have high-speed Internet access but most prefer local search engines.

Instead of just a flat solid color, Toshiba used its Fusion Finish on the P505D with its sonic pattern in black onyx. Its a light pinstripe pattern on a glossy black background on the lid, with palm rests, and speaker surround above the keyboard. The speakers sound great by the way, far above the laptops budget price tag. The keyboard is large and comfortable with a full number pad on the right end. The keys are flat like a chiclet style keyboard, but they float above the tray so youll have to watch your cookie crumbs.

Theyre also somewhat slick, making it slightly unpleasant to type on. Due to the glossy nature of everything, the laptop collects a lot of fingerprints. Overall, Toshiba Satellite P505D is a nice looking package and is certainly what a majority of its cost went to. To the right of the keyboard is a set of backlit touch sensitive media controls, the power button, and an Eco mode key. This mode significantly cuts back on power usage by cutting back on display brightness and other nonessential features.

It also shows a line graph to prove the power savings. The 18.4 inch wide screen LCD display offers a 1.680x945 native resolution, which is not standard for a screen this size. In fact, weve never tested a system with this size screen carrying such a low resolution. More standard for this size are resolutions of 1.920x1.080 or 1.900x1.200. Despite the lower resolution, the screen is good for just about anything youll do on it, with decent color performance, brightness, and dynamic range. If those are two things youre interested in, youll want to search out a P500 series laptop that actually has them.

Ports for the most part are what we expect to find on a system in this price range. Only the eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port is an anomaly, but its a good one and has Toshibas sleep and charge feature for charging devices even when the computers sleeping. Also, though there are spots for HDMI and DisplayPort connections on the left side, they have been plugged up.

If those are two things youre interested in, youll want to check out another version of the P500 series that actually has them. Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8930 is a retail only fixed configuration, so what you get is what you get. However, the memory and hard drive compartments are easily accessed through the bottom of the case. This model comes with 4GB of memory, but can be expanded to 8GB total.

Researchers at a US laboratory claim to have created the darkest material ever; a carbon nanotube which is one atom thick and rolled into a cylinder. For an object to be completely black, it must absorb all the colors of light over every angle and wavelength while reflecting none back, and scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, may have just gotten one step closer. The team built an array of vertically aligned, low-density nanotubes -- rough on the surface to minimize reflections -- and then measured the optical properties. They discovered that the objects very good at absorbing light, while downright rotten at reflecting it, thus creating a new standard for "blackness."

In practice, their nanotubes could form a super-black object, leading to the creation of more efficient solar panels or solar cells, or more importantly, a Kuro display that goes beyond absolute black. "Theyve made the blackest material known to science," Says Professor Sir John Pendry, though Shafts representatives have called for a recount.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Number Porting is available for all existing Google Voice users. This means you can make the mobile number you’ve always used your Google Voice number, so it can ring any phone you want—or even your computer.



To get started with Number Porting, log in to your Google Voice account, visit the Settings page and click on “Change / Port” next to your Google Voice number.



Porting your number to Google Voice costs $20 and is usually completed within 24 hours. You may incur additional charges, including early termination fees, from your wireless carrier. Contact your carrier to get more details about the charges applicable to you.

After porting your number to Google Voice your mobile service plan will be cancelled, and there are a couple of steps that you’ll have to take to continue making and receiving calls on your mobile device. For more detailed instructions on how Number Porting works and to find tips for making the process as smooth as possible, visit the Google Voice Help Center.

Well-judged blend of quality, price and features

HPs Envy line is the companys high-end range - the top-class stuff, in theory - but has produced mixed results recently. We were impressed by the Spectre XT and Envy X2, but werent so sure about the Envy 6 or Envy 4.

But the HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j004ea is closer to what the Envy line originally stood for, so we always had high hopes for it. Its simply a highly specd machine, fitted into a smart chassis.
Inevitably for a Windows 8 laptop, it has a touchscreen. But its generally aiming straight at being a regular premium machine, without gimmicks or being incredibly small and light. Think MacBook Pro or Samsung Series 7 Chronos rather than MacBook Air.

Reassuringly weighty

Indeed, at 29.9mm thick and weighing 2.56kg, its far from being an Ultrabook. But what you get in exchange is a superb spec sheet. Theres a quad-core Intel processor, a 2GB Nvidia graphics card, a colossal 16GB of RAM and a generous 1TB hard drive.

Thats all combined with a 1080p screen, Beats Audio speakers, a full-size keyboard and multitouch trackpad, and four USB 3.0 ports (most laptops will only give you two SuperSpeed ports).

Its all particularly impressive for the price. At around £1,000, its great value for pros, making the extra £500 youd spend on a MacBook Pro or Razer Blade Pro seem steep if the core specs are what you want.

HP isnt just applying the premium features to whats inside the machine, though - its taken a stab at upping the build quality on the outside, too. The casing is partly aluminium, specifically on the top and sides of the bottom half of the machine, making it feel solid and high-quality in use.

Its a little bit of a cheat, because it reverts to plastic on the bottom, but thats not to the detriment of the overall build quality. Theres very little of the creaking or flex you get on cheaper laptops - except for on the back of the screen, where the case does bend quite a lot. We doubt it would be enough for the screen to get damaged in normal use, though.

Theres also a little bit of give beneath the keyboard, but from our time with it, we dont see any effect that would have on durability.

Review

The UE9000 is huge and hefty, but for a good reason. It is built with premium brushed aluminium and piano black gloss plastic materials. The headband has a strip of silicon rubber instead of the usual leather to give a better grip on your head. You can connect via wireless Bluetooth that supports voice profile, allowing you to answer phone calls from your smartphone. It also has active noise-cancelling function which was not very effective and cannot be disabled. When you press the noise-cancelling button to disable it, you mute the sound as well.

You can also connect the audio cable directly to any music device and listen to the UE9000. The cable comes with mic, volume and answer buttons to use with iOS devices (the volume buttons do not work with non-iOS devices). Using cable, you can choose either to listen without the power, or with power which activates the noise-cancelling function. The latter also amplifies the volume and boosts the bass response tremendously. Personally I prefer to listen without power, as I thought it sounded more natural, albeit with less pompous bass. Somehow the amplifier - and perhaps with the noise-cancelling function - applies an audio limiter to compress the sound.

Conclusion

The UE9000 is a multi-functional headphones: use it with Bluetooth to enjoy your music and pick up calls from your smartphone wirelessly, or use it with cable when battery runs out. The noise-cancelling function is not that effective but nevertheless a good feature to eliminate some ambient noise. Audiophiles will appreciate the subdued but balanced sound quality when using with cables and without power. Bass-hungry users will love the sub-bass response and boosted treble when noise-cancelling function is active. The UE9000 is some good quality headphones, but contains too much gadgetry in a product, eclipsing the audio quality that Ultimate Ears is known for.

Buenos días desde Buenos Aires!! Wow, we are just blazing through the summer! We had an exciting Google I/O in May where we saw the launch of the Go runtime, introduction of the Backends feature, and confirmed Googles commitment to the platform with our plans to leave preview mode, not to mention the five releases since that time. We then hit the road this summer with team members appearing around the globe, including mega events like the Cloud Computing Expo, EuroPython, and OSCON.



At Google I/O, many App Engine team members gave in-depth technical sessions. Alfred Fuller, an App Engine Datastore engineer, revealed how the High Replication datastore gives greater reliability and availability for users. Michael Handler, one of App Engine’s talented Site Reliability Engineers, discussed how App Engine works in production. At OSCON, the largest open source event in the world, yours truly gave a three-hour App Engine overview and workshop to help new users get up to speed, and earlier in the year at PyCon, described how Python users can avoid “vendor lock-in” via the Django-nonrel project by porting their applications from webapp to Django, allowing them to move on to or off of App Engine as they please with only minor configuration changes. We participate in events like these because we like to communicate with users to find out what they like & don’t like about the platform, and we often take their suggestions to heart!



This fall we have a full schedule, appearing at many developer events worldwide, including Google Developer Days and Google DevFests. At the Google events, well recap App Engine and those announcements we made at I/O, and you’ll learn how to build exciting applications using App Engine and other Google cloud technologies as well as how to build games in the cloud.
